Rules, Regulations, and Laws at the Library
The Gravette Public Library is a service that is provided to the public of Gravette and surrounding areas. To become a member of the Gravette Public Library, you will need to provide a valid picture id, and verification of residency. If you are a resident within the Gravette School District, a membership is only $2.00 per patron or $5.00 per family. If you are non-resident, adult memberships are $10.00 each, and Junior/Children memberships are $5.00 each. Any one under the age of 18, will need a parent/guardian to fill out and sign their paper work.
With a library membership, you are able to check out materials. Adults can check out 5 materials at a time and Junior/Children can check out 3 materials at a time for a two week period. You will also be able to use the Internet computers after signing an Internet form. Any one under the age of 18, will need their parent/guardian to fill out and sign their Internet Form.
As in any business there are rules, regulations, and laws that the Gravette Public Library has to follow and enforce. The Gravette Public Library has “Rules of Conduct” that the patrons and employees need to be aware of and to follow. If the “Rules of Conduct” are broken, first we give a warning. With the second offense we give the patron a one day suspension, and with the third offense they are permanently suspended. The Gravette Public Library has the “Rules of Conduct” posted in several places within the library. If you would like to have a copy of the “Rules of Conduct”, please come by the library at 407 Charlotte Street SE and get a copy. The Library encourages all parents whose children uses the library to please stop by and get a copy of the “Rules of Conduct”.
As with any library, if you have materials that become past due, the library will try to contact you to remind you of the due date and fines accrued. Arkansas Public Library Law “13-2-704” Disclosure Permitted states that a library may disclose personally identifiable information concerning any patron to:
(1) The patron;
(2) Any person with the informed, written consent of the patron given at the time the disclosure is sought;
(3) A law enforcement agency or civil court, pursuant to a search warrant; or
(4) Any person, including, but not limited to, the patron, who has received an automated telephone notification or other electronic communication for overdue materials or reserve materials if the person making the request can verify the telephone number or e-mail address to which the notice was sent.
An explanation of this law is that the Gravette Public Library can NOT let anyone besides the patron know what materials they have check out on their account. This also includes minors. So if a parent wants to know what their child has checked out, without that child’s consent the Library can NOT tell that parent. If a husband or wife wants to know what their spouse has out, the library can NOT tell them without the others consent. The Gravette Public Library is working with the Library Commission to get forms for patrons to sign giving their spouse, parents/guardians, or other people permission to know what is within their library account. These forms should be available by December 1, 2006. Please stop by the Gravette Public Library in December with your child, spouse, or whomever to sign this form for future needs.
The Gravette Public Library staff does not make up the rules, regulations, or laws. However, it is their job to enforce them. We appreciate your understanding and patience, for the library staff is only doing their job. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kimberley Gibson, Library Manager at 479-787-6955 or come to a Library Commission meeting on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30. The next meeting will be on November 20th at 6:30PM. All commission meetings are open to the public.

In recognition of our state’s unique history, Governor Mike Huckabee recently signed a proclamation designating October 22-28, 2006 as Archives week in Arkansas. At the Gravette Public Library we have just recently designated a room as our Archives Room. Within the Archives room we have a microfilm machine, along with films of past Gravette News Herald issues. We also have maps, past magazine issues, genealogy information, and much more. We would like to invite you to come and visit our Archive room along with many new things at the Gravette Public Library.
The Gravette Public Library would like to introduce a new volunteer. Her name is Katherine Hughes. She is a resident of Bella Vista and is new to our area. We would like to welcome her to the Gravette Public Library and would encourage you to come and visit her at the library. She will be volunteering on Thursdays. She will help with the Home School Program and with the after school children.
